This year the American Open is proud to announce a brand new sponsor, The Chess Piece.com. This company retails some of the most beautiful and elegant chessmen and chess boards available in the United States and has been trading for over eight years. You may not have heard of them as they are located in Florida and have not done much in the way of national promotion, deriving much of their business from word of mouth. Those who attended the Senior Open in Boca Raton this year were impressed by the fact that this company provided 45 high-end sets and boards at the invitation of the USCF to cover all the games in that national event.

For this year’s American Open, they have also agreed to let us have the use of 13 of the most impressive sets they have to offer. There will be six ebony and six rare red sandalwood sets for Boards Two through Thirteen, and on Board One, they have agreed to allow us to use their unique set and board, The Triple Decker chess set featuring their exclusive Alban design. This set and double-sided board is actually three sets in one and retails for over $1000! This is a truly unique product and a concept designed by them and there's really nothing like it on the US market today. TheChessPiece.com has generously allowed us to auction this masterpiece with the funds going to the American Open to help us perpetuate this American Classic and Heritage tournament which they humbly support.

The auction starts now and the minimum bid is $800. We expect the bidding to go easily to five figures, especially when the players at the American Open actually lay eyes on this beauty. We will also see to it that the lucky new owner of The Alban Triple Decker Chess set has a certificate signed by the American Open Champion attesting to its authenticity.

The Alban is the first in a series of Triple Decker chess sets that The Chess Piece has launched. A Triple Decker chess set comprises a collection of three sets of pieces: boxwood white pieces and alternate ebony and red sandalwood pieces with optional double sided chessboard with ebony and boxwood squares on one side and red sandalwood and boxwood squares on the other “flip” side. The product includes an exceptionally well-designed leather storage case that has also been designed by TheChessPiece.com and manufactured by a leading case manufacturer in India. The term "Triple Decker" is derived from the fact that the leather case has three levels or decks (trays) holding the 17 pieces (there are extra queens)of each side of three sets of chessmen, in much the same way as a triple-decker bus would accommodate three levels of passengers.
